Hagia Sophia is open to visitors every day of the week.
Summer Season (April 1 – October 31)
09:00 AM – 07:00 PM
Winter Season (November 1 – March 31)
09:00 AM – 06:00 PM
Pro Tip
To avoid long lines, arrive by 08:30 AM or visit after 05:00 PM. The busiest hours are usually between 11:00 AM and 03:30 PM.
Average Visit Duration: Most visitors spend around 45 to 60 minutes inside Hagia Sophia, depending on crowd levels and whether they use an audio guide or guided tour.
Prayer Time Restrictions
As an active mosque, Hagia Sophia is closed to tourists during the five daily prayer times. On Fridays, the building closes for the noon prayer and usually reopens to tourists after 02:30 PM.
Hagia Sophia is in Sultanahmet, in Istanbul's Old City. It is easy to reach by public transport or on foot.
By Tram (T1 Line)
This is the easiest option. Get off at Sultanahmet Station. Hagia Sophia is only a 2-minute walk away.
By Marmaray
Take the Marmaray train to Sirkeci Station. From there, you can walk uphill for 10–15 minutes or change to the T1 tram for two stops.
From Taksim Square
Take the F1 Funicular to Kabataş, then change to the T1 tram going towards Bağcılar.
By Taxi
Taxis can drop you off near Sultanahmet Square, but many streets in the Old City are closed to cars during the day.
Parking
Parking is limited in the Sultanahmet area. The closest paid parking areas are near Sirkeci and Cankurtaran. Public transport is usually the better option.
On Foot
If you are staying in Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, or Eminönü, Hagia Sophia is easy to reach on foot through the historic square.

Dress code & entry etiquette
Hagia Sophia is an active mosque, so all visitors must follow the dress code.
For Women
Shoulders and knees must be covered. A headscarf is required. If needed, headscarves are provided free of charge at the entrance.
For Men
Shoulders and knees must be covered. Avoid tank tops and very short shorts. Simple and modest clothing is recommended for all visitors.
Footwear
Tourists usually visit the Upper Gallery through a separate entrance, so you normally do not need to remove your shoes unless you enter the prayer area on the ground floor.

Accessibility & facilities
Hagia Sophia offers basic visitor facilities, but some areas may be difficult to access.
Wheelchair Access
The ground floor is accessible for wheelchair users. The Upper Gallery is reached by a historic stone ramp, which may be difficult for some visitors.
Strollers
Baby strollers are allowed, but the stone ramps can be hard to use. A baby carrier may be more comfortable.
Security Check
All visitors must pass through security. During busy hours, this may take 15–20 minutes.
Storage
There are no lockers or cloakrooms inside. Large suitcases and tripods are not allowed.
Visiting with Children
Hagia Sophia is suitable for families, but crowds and ramps can be difficult with small children. A baby carrier is a good option.

Photos are allowed without flash. Tripods and professional equipment are not allowed without special permission.

There is little shade in the outdoor queue area. Bring water and a hat in summer, or an umbrella in winter.
Seasonal Clothing Tip
Wear light clothes in summer and bring a light waterproof layer in winter, especially if you may need to wait outside.
